Hello again. Chicken wing for your thoughts?

It's been almost a full calendar year since I sat down at the computer to wax lyrical. Probably about the garden. In fact, I just checked. It was indeed about the garden. Specifically about the Winter winds making me uneasy, a problem that has again arisen in the last week- they're right on schedule.

The winter winds aren't the only thing on my mind.

Usually I've got something to say and I'm generally not afraid to say it - or at least write it. That's a helpful trait for an occasional writer.

Of course, sometimes inspiration ebbs and flows, mirroring life. And life has been ebbing, but it's more than that.

On occasion we writers can be prolific - with the words and the structure and the themes just flowing easily.

Sometimes there is writer's block. That's when you have something to say, although the exact right way to write it escapes you, but you care enough to want to persevere and somehow do justice to the thoughts swirling around your head.

Then, there's what has been happening in the past year - where I've had very little to say, and honestly, no real desire to write anything at all. I've taken up studying again to reinvent myself so my brain is being used for necessary writing and it's been easier and more comfortable to leave other things unsaid. I've simply run out of content. Ugh.

I've wondered so many times - why do I write? Is anything I've got to say any more important or different or more meaningful than the constant humdrum we're hearing all the time? Does my voice make a difference? Is it being heard? Does it even matter if it's being heard?

Does sporadically writing a blog post about food and the garden (intertwined with musings on life) even count as writing? If a tree falls in the forest.......

Have I stopped reading other people's words in favour of instagramming or doomscrolling on tik-tok which are much easier ways to consume stories without any concentration? The answer is unfortunately, undoubtedly, yes. Is that why I'm no longer writing?

When I lived in what feels like a different lifetime, I thought I had much more relevant and interesting things to say. I could write about new bars, and restaurants with exciting and innovative menus or at the very least, a blogger meet up or two. But now, It's different. Life is different and we're all just out here cosplaying and trying to fix our sore backs and figure out what makes us happy.

You know what's not really relevant at all? It's also not clever or wise, it's not a hot tip or heart-warming or even a little bit witty. But it does make me really happy.

Chicken wings. Crispy or gelatinous, Adobo or buffalo- It's as simple as that. I started writing about food because food is life and I wanted to take down The Coffee Club and save the world from one shit restaurant at a time. I kept writing because it's where I found my voice and my people and a slice of joy and it feels like there's been a little less of that lately; And so today, I'm going to tell you about chicken wings.

We've started a new situation that is a definite hit- Wing night. Once a week, I select a wing type and Chip cooks it. It's a real riot actually! Especially when it involves various pans, and multiple types of oil and flour to achieve the perfect result.

Wings are cheap, cost of living sucks,. Wings are delicious and they're so adaptable. Chicken wings are also fun and it's so easy to forget to have fun.

So my life changing, unsolicited and unqualified advice is to go and have wing night. Or Pizza night or Taco night. Just pick something you love and make it with someone you love for people you love otherwise it will reveal what's going on within. I've found that when I'm sad my food tastes awful - so try to pop in a touch of joy.

So far we've done braised Filipino style, crispy hot honey with garlic and sticky soy. Sticky soy are unanimously number 1. Next week, we might even go rogue and try a garlic parm but we're open to suggestions, pop them below.

See that didn't take long- and who knows, it may be another year between beers (or writing a blog post)- but it won't be another year between wing nights.
